Nearly 1 Million Bikes Recalled After Rider Left Paralyzed

About 1 million bikes from Trek Bicycle Corp. are being recalled over a quick-release lever on the front of the bike that has caused injuries to riders, including one who ended up paralyzed.

The recall involves all models from 2000 through 2015 that have front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel hub, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement Wednesday.

The lever can cause the bicycle to stop suddenly, or the wheel to separate from the bike completely. The CPSC has reported three injures from the bikes, including an instance of quadriplegia.

The recall impacts 900,000 bikes in the United States and 98,000 in Canada.

The CPSC is advising bike owners to "stop using the bicycles immediately.” Meanwhile, the company is offering free installations of new quick-releases through authorized Trek retailers, as well as a $20 coupon.

"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you," Trek said in a statement. "We value you as a customer and want you to safely enjoy cycling on your Trek bicycle."
