Police confirmed that the man shot by officers Thursday evening in New Jersey after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife is suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend and their 4-year-old son, who were found dead in their New Jersey home last week.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jose Ronald Santos-Alvarez, allegedly lunged at one of the officers with a knife after they encountered the suspect on Clay Street in Hackensack. The officer's partner then shot the suspect.
An arrest warrant had been issued for Santos-Alvarez, the former restaurant worker suspected of strangling Monika Potoczniak and their son, Christopher. He is charged with two counts of murder.
Both the wounded officer and Santos-Alvarez were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.
The officer suffered minor wounds, according to police. Santos-Alvarez's condition was unknown; he underwent surgery overnight.
