Former Gang Member Fired From Corrections Department Reinstated to Six-Figure Job

Federal court records show at least 24 arrests on Xadrian McCraven's record

A former Chicago street gang member who was dismissed last year from a high-paying job with the Illinois Department of Corrections has been reinstated.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Xadrian McCraven returned to his $111,432-a-year job as a senior policy adviser on Dec. 22. McCraven regained the job after an independent arbitrator ruled he was wrongly fired.

Corrections department spokesman Tom Shaer says the department is appealing the arbitrator's ruling.

McCraven was fired in January 2014 after the Sun-Times reported he had been arrested dozens of times. He was also fired in 2012 from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

McCraven, who wouldn't comment on the arbiter's decision, was hired by DCFS despite having misdemeanor convictions. Federal court records also show at least 24 arrests.
