Florida Usher Steals From Church Collection Baskets: Sheriff

A volunteer church usher in north Florida is facing charges after authorities said he took money from church collection baskets.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office reports that 60-year-old Mario Condis was arrested Sunday on grand theft and other charges for allegedly taking money from the Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala. Authorities set up surveillance after another usher tipped them off.

The sheriff's office said surveillance video caught Condis stuffing cash from the baskets into his pockets while the congregation had its eyes closed in prayer.

According to The Ocala Star-Banner, detectives confronted Condis on Sunday and found $349.05 in his pockets.

Condis said the money was his and denied the theft.

He later said he was going to put the money back, according to the sheriff's office.
