A horse has died after falling into a family's swimming pool in Florida.

Owner Erica Lucas said the animal was already in distress when it tried to drink from the pool and fell in. First responders thought they were responding to a human drowning at the Lake Worth home Sunday.

Instead, they found the large brown horse standing in about three feet of water. At one point, the owner of 23-year-old Shine said the animal was actually swimming in the pool.

A Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy walked into the water in full uniform, sat down on the steps and calmed Shine. According to the Palm Beach Post, rescuers then rigged 2-by-4s and a carpet to lead the animal out.

Shine had a seizure and died later that night. Lucas said the horse died from colic and an intestinal obstruction, not from falling into the pool.
