Brown Campus Newspaper Apologizes for Racist Columns

Brown University's campus newspaper has apologized after it published what it says were two "deeply hurtful" and racist columns.

The Brown Daily Herald published an editor's note Wednesday apologizing for the two opinion columns written by student M. Dzhali Maier.

The Herald says "The white privilege of cows," published Monday, relied on the disproven notion that biological differences exist between races. "Columbian Exchange Day," published Tuesday, said Native Americans should be thankful for colonialism. The newspaper removed the latter from its website.

Maier could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.

The editor's note says the newspaper will review the editorial processes that allowed these mistakes to happen.

Members of the editorial board didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
