Wounded Vets Cycling to Raise Rehab Awareness

Dozens of injured service members are mounting up to raise awareness in the nation's capital about bicycling rehabilitation for disabled veterans.

The Wounded Warrior Project’s 7th annual Soldier Ride cycled through Northern Virginia Friday.

Soldier Ride is a cycling event involving adaptive hand cycles, trikes, and bicycles that have been modified to accommodate people with various injuries and disabilities.

After being fitted with cycles Tuesday, the group will take rides ranging from 17 miles to 25 miles.

On Friday, about three dozen men and women gathered for a 17-mile circuit through Mason Neck State Park in Lorton, Va.

For them, the ride is about so much more than taking in the scenery.

"It means linking up with my brothers and sisters, and it's another stage of my rehabilitation," said Soldier Ride participant Sedrick Banks.

It's been a busy week for the group; there was a weather-whipped circuit in Annapolis, and on Thursday, they were honored at the White House.

The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride began Tuesday at National Harbor and continues through Saturday.
