Man Posing as Maintenance Worker Sexually Assaults Woman in Her Southeast D.C. Home

A woman was sexually assaulted in her Southeast D.C. home Tuesday afternoon by a man who told her he was a maintenance worker, police sources say.

The man entered a small apartment building on the 1800 block of A Street SE between 2 and 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday night.

A suspect had been arrested and was being held in Maryland, police said in an update Wednesday evening. Charges of first-degree sexual abuse and burglary are pending.

Neighbors said they were horrified by the crime near the Stadium-Armory Metro station.

"This is a safe block. We've had some problems in the past, but this is rape," Denise Krepp, the ANC commissioner for the area, said.

Krepp advised D.C. residents to connect with their communities by reaching out to their ANC commissioners and signing up for the police listserv for their district.
