Mack Burton says he knew a day would come when he would have to live without his wife, but he wasn't 'expecting it [to be] yesterday.'
Burton's wife of 51 years, Patsy Stokes Burton, died after being struck by a bus near Main and Water streets in Upper Marlboro on Thursday morning.
Burton, 69, who worked in the area, was crossing the street when she was struck by a county transportation bus also known as "The Bus." She died at the scene.
Burton described his wife as a "wondrous woman, a great woman," and recalled their marriage, just a few days after she finished high school, in an interview with News4's Darcy Spencer.
"The sparks grew, and the flames grew, and so we stayed together for 51 years," he said.
"She loved her kids, she loved her grandchildren and she loved me," he added.
That love was also felt by their son, Benjamin.

"She was the first to drop everything for herself and do [something] for somebody else," he said. "That's really who she was."
Prince George's County Police are investigating the incident. Surveillance video from the scene shows a woman crossing the street, but officials have not yet identified whether she was crossing at a stoplight.
Mark Brady, spokesperson for Prince George's County Fire and EMS, said officials will look at videos from the area's stores for more details on the case.
As for Mack, he says he is "71 years young" and will continue to "do the same things I've been doing, just won't have a partner to do it with."
