Woman Found Dead in Dewey Beach Motel Room

Cleaning lady found body

A man wanted in the death of a woman found inside a Dewey Beach, Del., motel room was found dead in New Jersey Tuesday.

Police wanted 26-year-old Pawan Kumar, of Wilmington, Del., on first-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony charges. Prosecutors in Essex County, N.J., told investigators in Delaware that Kumar was found dead in the Bellville Motor Lodge in Bellville, N.J.

Cleaning staff had found the body of 26-year-old Danielle Mehlman of Bensalem, Pa., Monday morning inside a ground-floor room at the Atlantic Oceanside Motel on Coastal Highway, police said. She had suffered multiple stab wounds, News4's Chris Gordon reported.

It was the first murder in Dewey Beach in anyone's memory.

The suspect and victim arrived at the motel together Sunday in the same car and were staying in the same room, which was registered in Kumar's name, Gordon reported, but the nature of their relationship is unclear.

Family members told NBC10 in Philadelphia that Mehlman was the mother of a 4-year-old and was a teacher in Philadelphia.

Kumar fled without the car he arrived in, Gordon reported. He was not considered a threat to the community.

On Monday evening, detectives had released surveillance images of the man believed to be the suspect in Mehlman's death.

Dewey Beach, located between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach along Delaware's Eastern Shore, is a popular summer destination, especially for college students and young adults.
