Woman Dies When Suspect Driving Stolen Car Crashes in Prince George's: Police

The suspect is still at large, police say

A man driving a stolen car crashed into another vehicle while trying to flee from Prince George's County police, killing a 43-year-old woman, authorities say.

An officer saw a man wearing a bandana was driving a car about the same time there was a reported armed carjacking in the area of East Forest Road in Landover, Maryland, Saturday night, police said.

The officer pulled the driver over just before 10 p.m. on Columbia Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, police say.

The driver initially stopped, but when the officer started walking toward the car, the suspect took off onto Martin Luther King Jr. Hwy., police said.

Twenty seconds later, the suspect then ran a red light and crashed into another car at the intersection of MLK Jr. Hwy. and Southland Drive, Prince George's County police say.

Maria Carrion, of Hyattsville, was rushed to a hospital, where she died of her injuries 45 minutes later, police said. Carrion was driving the car struck by the stolen vehicle.

After the crash, the suspect and a passenger inside the stolen car ran away from the scene.

Police took the female passenger into custody about two blocks away, authorities said. Detectives are still working to identify the driver.

The officer who stopped the suspect before the crash did not pursue the car when it fled from the traffic stop, according to police.

Police say the driver might be injured from the crash and are asking anyone who can help investigators identify the driver to call 911 or 301-731-4422. Anonymous callers can call 1-866-411-TIPS.
