Woman, 84, Killed in District Heights House Fire

An 84-year-old woman was killed in a house fire in District Heights, Maryland, Sunday night.

Someone called 911 just after 11 p.m. Sunday to report a fire on the 6000 block of North Hil Mar Circle. The 911 caller told the dispatcher that someone was trapped inside the home.

When firefighters arrived, they began searching for the trapped resident and found Doris Miller on the second floor of the home. They pulled Miller to safety, but she died from her injuries at the hospital.

Miller's daughter and her fiancee were able to escape the fire, but they couldn't save Miller because the fire was too intense, a neighbor said.

"It's a tragedy," he told News4.

Fire officials say no working smoke detectors were found inside the home. After the blaze, firefighters went door to door to ensure neighbors had working smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
