Weekend Road Closures: Cherry Blossom Parade, Japanese Street Fest, Emancipation Day Events

It's a weekend full of big events in D.C. -- and of course, with that comes road closures and parking restrictions.

The National Cherry Blossom Parade (10 a.m.-noon), the Sakura Matsuri-Japanese Street Festival (10:30-6 p.m.) and the Emancipation Day parade, concert and fireworks (2-8:30 p.m.) will all have an effect on traffic this weekend.

Read on for the changes sparked by each event:

National Cherry Blossom Parade

On Saturday, the following streets will be closed from about 3:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • 4th Street and 7th Street, between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW

The following streets will be closed from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Constitution Avenue between 6th Street NW and 23rd Street NW
  • 9th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Constitution Avenue NW
  • 10th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Constitution Avenue NW
  • 12th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW
  • SE/SW Freeway-Access to 12th Street Tunnel from I-395 ramp
  • 14th Street between North Pennsylvania Avenue NW to Independence Avenue SW
  • Inbound I-395 (14th Street Bridge). All traffic will be sent eastbound on I-395 SW Freeway
  • 17th Street between New York Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW
  • 19th Street between E Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW
  • Virginia Avenue NW between 20th Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW

Parking will be prohibited on the above streets during the closures. Enforcement of these parking restrictions which may include ticketing and towing along the entire parade route. Find more information on the Metropolitan Police Department website here.

The following streets will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic from about 7 p.m. Friday until about 12 a.m. Sunday:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, from 3rd Street, NW, to 7th Street, NW
  • Constitution Avenue, NW, from 3rd Street, NW, to 7th Street, NW
  • 4th Street, NW, from Madison Drive, NW, to Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
  • 6th Street, NW, from C Street, NW, to Constitution Avenue, NW

Emergency No Parking signs will be posted at the following locations from about 6 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Sunday:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue NW from 3rd Street NW to 7th Street NW
  • Constitution Avenue NW from 3rd Street NW to 7th Street NW
  • 4th Street NW from Madison Drive NW to Pennsylvania Avenue NW
  • 6th Street NW from C Street NW to Constitution Avenue NW

Emancipation Day Celebration

The following streets will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. for the Freedom Plaza concert:

  • E Street NW from 13th Street NW to 14th Street NW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue NW from 12th Street NW to 14th Street NW
  • 13th Street NW from E Street NW to Pennsylvania Avenue NW

The following streets will be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the parade staging area:

  • 10th Street NW between E Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW

The following streets will be closed from 1 to 3 p.m. for the parade. 

  • Pennsylvania Avenue NW from 9th Street NW to 14th Street NW
  • 10th Street NW between E Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW
  • 11th Street NW between E Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW
  • 12th Street NW between E Street, NW and Constitution Avenue NW
  • 13th Street NW from E Street NW to Pennsylvania Avenue NW
  • E Street NW between 13th Street NW and 14th Street NW
