A National Weather Service tornado warning for south central Charles County and central St. Mary's County in southern Maryland expired at 8:30 p.m., and a tornado watch expired at 2 a.m. for Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties in Maryland.
But a dense fog advisory for the entire D.C. area is in effect until 8 a.m. Visibility could be less than a quarter mile. Drivers should slow down and use their low-beam headlights in areas of heavy fog.
A tornado warning issued at 7:05 p.m. for east entral Spotsylvania County and southern King George County in Virginia expired at 7:45 p.m. A tornado warning for southeastern Charles County and central St. Mary's County in southern Maryland expired at 6 p.m.
A tornado warning expired at 5 p.m. for Fredericksburg, Va., and southern Spotsylvania and south central Stafford counties, says the National Weather Service. A similar warning was in effect for southeastern King George County, Va., through 5:30 p.m.
A tornado watch in the D.C. Metro area, scheduled through 8 p.m. tonight, was called off early. That watch had been issued around noon today for much of the area, including the District; Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland; and Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Prince Willian and Stafford counties in Virginia. Parts of Southern Maryland and Balitmore County were also included in that watch.
The weather system that hammered the Midwest yesterday hit us overnight and Wednesday morning, with more than an inch of rain in some parts of Virginia, said NBC Washington meteorologist Tom Kierein.
That same system brought more rain showers back to the metro area Wednesday.
Wednesday's warm, wet weather will give way to much cooler air by the start of the weekend -- with lots of sun.

The changes will kick in Friday morning, with temps in the low 40s with a high in the 50s. Saturday will be even cooler, with the morning in the 30s, and maybe some scattered frost in the rural areas.
The chillier weather should be refreshing -- but plenty sunny -- for the weekend's activities, especially if you're attending Halloween festivities, Saturday's rallies on the Mall or the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday.
Sunday morning should be in the 40s for the start of the race, warming up to the 50s with a high near 60 for the runners.
