Washington Monument Reopens, Closes Again

The Washington Monument opened on time Sunday after three employees got stuck on the elevator inside the monument when it broke down Saturday night, a National Mall and Memorial Parks spokeman said.

However, the monument closed again later Sunday after the elevator doors would not open at the 490-foot level. One employee was inside and was about to get out after the doors reopened.

Sixty-two people who were in the monument on Sunday were evacuated.

Three employees were trapped in the elevator Saturday for about 40 minutes, and 73 visitors were evacuated via the stairs from the observation level after the elevator stopped between the 490 and 500 foot levels at 9:20 p.m.

The National Park Service said it will make the call whether to open the monument on Monday.
