Virginia Woman Facing More Than $10,000 in Express Lane Tolls, Fees

E-ZPass wasn't set up for auto-renewal

A Virginia woman is facing more than $10,000 in administrative fees, court costs and civil penalties as a result of driving in the Interstate 495 Express Lanes.

WTOP reported that Toni Cooley took 11 trips over a two-week span in 2012, but her E-ZPass did not register because she did not properly set up auto-renewal on her account.

The radio station reports Transurban, the express lanes' operator, sent Cooley a bill for several hundred dollars in tolls and fees and Cooley wrote a check for about $11, to pay for her tolls but no fees. The bills escalated from there.

A judge will ultimately decide whether Cooley must pay. Transurban says the fees are proper and needed to recover the costs for equipment and efforts to track down drivers.
