Virginia Woman Dies While Skydiving in South Carolina

A Virginia woman has died in a skydiving accident in South Carolina.

Chester County Emergency Management Director Eddie Murphy told news outlets the woman died at the county airport around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Coroner Terry Tinker says the victim was 68-year-old Carolyn Clay of Williamsburg, Virginia.

Tinker says Clay's main parachute opened and she went into a spin and died from blunt force trauma after hitting the ground.

Skydive Carolina issued a statement Thursday evening saying Clay was participating in an annual event called CarolinaFest and had more than 15,000 skydives.

The death is still being investigated.

The airport is near Lowrys, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Rock Hill.
