Virginia Is for Lucky Muthas

Couple is second from state to hit jackpot in May

RICHMOND, Va. -- A Rappahannock County couple has become Virginia's second Mega Millions jackpot winner this month.

Joe and Sue Claffy won $19 million in the May 15 drawing, Virginia Lottery officials said Thursday.

Joe Claffy bought $6 worth of tickets after the clerk at Martin's Food Market in Front Royal asked him if he wanted to play. The winning ticket was one of two nationwide to split the $38 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The other winning ticket was bought in Irvine, Calif.

The Claffys are both retired. They told lottery officials they will use the money to take care of family and make a few purchases for themselves.

On May 1, Joe Denette purchased a ticket in Spotsylvania County that won $75.6 million.
