Veterans’ Cemetery Grave Markers Damaged

Dozens of families were devastated to find the graves of their loved ones defaced, damaged and moved around at a Maryland cemetery for veterans.

A photo posted to Facebook this week showed grave markers displaced and marked with tire tracks at the Cheltenham Veterans' Cemetery in southern Maryland.

According to Edward Chow with Maryland Veterans' Affairs, an employee drove a backhoe onto the cemetery grounds after several days of rain, in an attempt to dig a new grave.

"The cemetery is the last vestige of honor we can give to our  veterans and I'm not going to allow any shortcuts to happen to [them]," Chow said.

Chow said the employee responsible for the damage has been retrained. Grave stones were put back in their places and washed and top soil has been added to fill ditches.

Family members of veterans buried at Cheltenham told News4 they were disappointed at the damage and felt their loved ones had been disrespected.
