The Virginia Department of Transportation wants to expand high-occupancy toll lanes, or HOT lanes, north along Interstate 395 to the vicinity of the D.C. line.
The latest proposal would add an additional HOV lane to make three reversible Express lanes on I-395. The project would extend the I-95 express lanes for eight miles toward the city.
Cars with three or more persons would continue to ride for free on the new lanes. Those willing to pay a toll would also be able to access the lanes.
The plan would also create HOT lanes along I-66, inside and outside the beltway.
VDOT said no major interchange construction would be required except for improvements to the Eads Street interchange. Some new sound walls would be built.
Construction would begin in the spring of 2017.
News4’s Adam Tuss said the proposal still have to go through a series of approvals. He said Arlington and Alexandria blocked a similar proposal in the past, but the state may be making adjustments to the plan to get the cities on board.
