Va. Babysitter Charged After Girl, 3, Drowns in Pool

A baby sitter has been charged after a 3-year-old girl drowned under her care last month.

Chelie L. Casswell, 45, has been indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of cruelty and injury to a child following the drowning death of a 3-year-old girl in her care, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Casswell was caring for the girl and a 2-year-old boy at their father's home in Aquia Harbour on Aug. 13 when a neighbor told her the boy was wandering in the street, authorities said. After retrieving the boy from a neighbor’s house, Casswell discovered the little girl was missing as well.

She was found unresponsive in the pool at the home and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Casswell is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail with a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Stafford County Circuit Court.
