Union Station Evacuated Due to Suspicious Package; Nothing Found

Union Station was evacuated for a short time Wednesday afternoon due to a suspicious package, D.C. police say.

News4's Meagan Fitzgerald reports about 5 p.m. police got a call about a suspicious package and possible reports of a bomb threat. Officers evacuated the station a short time later.

Authorities reopened the station a few minutes later after finding no dangerous materials inside an object, Fitzgerald reports.

Metro Transit Police said it was assisting Amtrak police to investigate the package in the Amtrak portion of the station.

Metro service was unaffected, Metro officials said.

MARC and VRE trains were held at the station during the investigation. VRE said are now departing the station.

According to CSN producer Doug McKinney, he was inside Union Station when dozens of police cars surrounded the station and authorities told people to get back.
