Union: Metro Driver Was on Work-Related Call

Bus driver was photographed on phone

Yes, a Metro bus driver was on the phone, as captured in a photo by a bus passenger. But the union that represents Metro workers said the driver being investigated was making a legit call.

The union said the driver never moved the bus while she was on the phone with the central control center.  The union said the call was made because her work-issued radio didn't work.

The driver has been on paid leave since she was photographed on the phone late last month. The passenger who took the photo gave it to the blog UnsuckDCMetro to post, and Metro officials promised to investigate. The transit agency has a new zero-tolerance policy for cell phone use by drivers.

Union president Jackie Jeter told the Washington Post she doesn't know why it's taking Metro so long to return the driver to duty. She said Metro has the taped conversation.

Metro said it doesn't comment on ongoing personnel investigations.
