A University of Maryland student who said she was robbed early Tuesday morning is now facing charges for making false a statement to police.
Teshauna Jones, 18, called Prince George's County shortly before 12:15 a.m. Tuesday and told police she was robbed at gunpoint as she walked home from the College Park Metro station.
Authorities say "a significant number of police officers and a K-9 team responded" to search for a suspect, but surveillance video didn't match Jones' story.
When police interviewed her again, Jones confessed to lying because she owed a relative money, they said.
The incident follows a rash of robberies of other UMD students. Prince George's County detectives have recently made arrests in two cases, including the arrest of three suspects on the scene of an armed robbery Jan. 27.
