Montgomery County Police are trying to figure out how an SUV slammed head-on into a tree this morning.
Two people were killed in the crash, which happened just before 3 a.m. New Year's Day near Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.
Police say the white 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer was heading westbound on Jones Bridge Road when it hit a curb at Lancaster Drive, plowed through a chain link fence, and crashed into a tree. A young man and a young woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say both were passengers in the SUV. The 22-year-old driver was taken to Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition, while the other two passengers, aged 18 and 19, were transported to Suburban Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police blocked off Jones Bridge Road for several hours while they investigated the accident. It is believed that all five people in the SUV were young adults, either in their late teens or early 20's. At this time, police will not say if alcohol or speed played a role in the accident.
A man who lives near the crash site told News4's Derrick Ward he thought his neighbor's roof had collapsed after he heared a loud crash and the sound of glass shattering. After that, he heard nothing but sirens.
Police say that the identities of the car's occupants will not be released until their families are notified.
