Police: Two Killed in Fairfax Co. Police Pursuit

Two men were killed and a third was injured in a crash that began as a police pursuit in Fairfax County, police said.

Suspecting the driver was intoxicated, an officer tried to pull the 1999 Dodge Neon over just before 2 a.m. Monday, but the driver took off.

"The vehicle immediately sped away as soon as the officer activated his emergency equipment," officer Bud Walker said. "[Though] this is technically a pursuit, it lasted less than a few seconds in less than a mile."

Investigators say the driver led the officer in a short chase before running off the road at Old Lee Highway and Hilltop Road and striking a tree.

The driver and one passenger died at the scene; a second passenger was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While police have not identified the victims, they say all of the occupants were adults. Police say the ID cards they had with them were fake.

Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
