Va. Woman Gets 12-Month Suspended Sentence in Crash That Killed Prince William Co. Officer

A Prince William County woman received a 12-month suspended sentence Monday in connection with a crash that killed a police officer.

Margaret Luecke was indicted for reckless driving back in February.

On Monday, a judge agreed with the prosecution's recommendation in handing down the sentence, which will mean Luecke is not expected to serve jail time. She was also ordered to pay a $2,500 fine and perform 200 hours of community service.

Luecke's driver's license will be suspended for six months.

The defense also agreed with the ruling.

"This was a tragic accident and I've been grieving since the day it happened, and I'm too upset to say anymore," Luecke said outside court Monday.

Prosecutors say on New Year's Eve, Luecke crossed into the path of Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung as she tried to turn left into a shopping center in Bristow.

Yung, who was on his motorcycle, was heading to the scene of another accident. His lights and sirens were activated at the time of the acident.

Their vehicles caught fire when they collided.

Luecke said she hadn't seen Yung until it was too late, reported News4 Northern Virginia Bureau reporter David Culver.

She teared up in court Monday, and said she thinks about Yung family every day.

A seven-year veteran of the department, Yung, 35, left behind a wife, Robin, and three children. He had previously served in the United States Marine Corps.

His parents, brothers and widows are in the courtroom Monday morning.  Yung's parents said they were disappointed they had not received an apology, although Yung's widow had, Culver reported.

"It seems my son's life was worth more than six months or 12 months of probation. But that's the court's decision and we'll live with it," Yung's father Edward Yung said.

Robin Yung told News4 in May that she visits her husband's grave once a week.

“I bring him flowers and I sit there," she said. "And I tell him how the kids are. And that they miss him. And that I miss him.”
