Frederick, Maryland teen Treeva Gibson stunned the judges on the "The Voice" Monday night with her performance on the season premiere -- a performance her parents didn't get to hear.
Both of her parents are deaf, and Gibson herself suffers from mild hearing loss.
As a result, Gibson, 16, is unable to hear an artist perform on a track -- yet she belted out a rendition of Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" that hasn't sounded so powerful since, well, Lana Del Rey sang it.
Growing up, Gibson was not exposed to music, so she took the initiative to listen and to learn, she said in an interview after her performance.
"With other people, their parents kind of influence them in a way, but my parents are deaf; they didn't listen to music, so it was something I kind of had to figure out on my own," she said.
Her persistence paid off -- judges Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton turned around within the first 30 seconds, their chairs illuminating "I want you."
When it came time to pick her coach, Gibson said in a heartwarming moment, "I'm going to sign this, so that my parents can see who I pick."

She then fingerspelled "Christina" in sign language, and will join Team Christina as she advances to the next round of competition.
Gibson said that in addition to Lana Del Ray, she's a fan of Amy Winehouse and Florence + the Machine, but is still figuring out her place in the music world.
"...I'm getting more into pop rock/indie kind of things, but I'm still discovering what I like and what I'm good at, so that's another reason why I'm here, just to know what I can do and what's right for me," she said.
