Trash, Tire Fire Burns Near Ft. Totten Transfer Station

D.C. fire units are working on a large tire and trash fire near the Fort Totten Transfer Station.

The fire was reported around 1:15 p.m. and crews encountered heavy fire and smoke when they arrived at John McCormack Drive and Bates Road, Northeast. They are using water and foam to try to extinguish the fire.

A front-end loader is being used to pull apart the tires and debris.

The station is a trash recycling station for D.C. residents. The Department of Public Works website said the station allows people to get rid of solid waste, household hazardous water and unwanted electronic equipment, and provides personal document shredding.

There is no word on what caused the fire and no reports of injuries.
