A van crashed into a car full of children in D.C. Monday night, killing the female driver of the car and leaving a toddler clinging to life.
The van was speeding when it crossed the median and slammed into the car in the 3600 block of Alabama Avenue in Southeast before 7 p.m., according to witnesses.
Four children, ranging in age from 2 to 11, were also inside the car. They were rushed to Children's National Medical Center, three in critical condition, the 2-year-old in grave condition.
Rescuers arrived at the accident scene to find the van on fire. Two adults inside were taken area hospitals. One of them was in serious condition.
The driver of the car, 37-year-old Mary Elizabeth Wimbush, was pinned in her car and had to be extricated. She was flown to Washington Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., authorities said.
The driver of the van, 34-year-old Ajene Jones, was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The accident is still under investigation.
