Thieves Try to Pull ATM Away With Truck in SE DC

Thieves targeted a store in Southeast Washington for the second time in two weeks, wrapping chains around an ATM outside the store and attempting to pull it away with a pickup truck.

A worker inside the BP gas station on Alabama Avenue SE said three masked men drove up to the store about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Two of the men wrapped a chain around an ATM outside the store while the third tried to pull the machine away with the truck.

The top portion of the ATM was heavily damaged, but police aren't sure the thieves got away with cash.

Some of the ATM's money can be stored in the bottom half of the machine, which remained intact.

This is the second time thieves have targeted the store in two weeks. About a week ago, someone hurled rocks at a glass door at the convenience store, but they weren't able to break into the store.
