THE BIG BOUNCE: STOCKS UP AFTER BANKS ANNOUNCEMENT
Wall Street got the news it wanted on the economy’s biggest problems — banks and housing — and celebrated by hurtling the Dow Jones industrials up nearly 500 points. Investors added rocket fuel Monday to a two-week-old advance, cheering the government’s plan to help banks remove bad assets from their books and also welcoming a report showing a surprising increase in home sales. Major stock indicators surged more than 6 percent, including the Dow, which had its biggest percentage gain since October. (MSNBC)
RECESSION CLAIMS NAT'S BBQ
Two local restaurants are pulling out of Nationals Park, according to Nats320. Apparently, the recession is taking its toll on the Memphis-style barbecue chain Red, Hot & Blue, which was popular at the park and more than welcome to return. (NBCWashington.com)
A CAPITAL IDEA
Residents of a small southwest Nebraska town have a question for state officials: You're not doing anything with that old electric chair, are you? The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled last year that the state's use of the electric chair was unconstitutional because it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. Some people in McCook — population just under 8,000 — think "Old Sparky" could be a tourist attraction and have offered to take it off the state's hands. (USA Today)
