Just before 4:30 a.m., a 15-year-old was awakened by a feeling that she couldn't breathe, she told police. She saw a man over her with his hand covering her mouth, preventing her from screaming, police said.
When the intruder started to choke the girl, she punched and kicked him until she had room to scream, according to police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.
The attacker fled through a window before the girl's mother entered the room.
The victim suffered scratches on her face and the beginning bruises on her throat, Bledsoe said. Her shirt was torn.
The intruder was described as heavyset around the waist with a short, military-style haircut and wearing a T-shirt and jeans shorts, police said. He may have been Hispanic.
