Teen Lifeguards Credited With Saving Boy

Two teens are credited with saving an unconscious 7-year-old boy at a Leesburg, Va. pool Wednesday afternoon.

“I locked eyes with him before he went under the water. Something happened, we don’t know what caused it,” lifeguard Tori Harvey said. “There was no screaming… no signs of struggle.”

Harvey, who had just gotten her life guarding certification a month ago, immediately took action, pulling the boy out of the water. Katelyn Price, a fellow lifeguard, helped Harvey resuscitate the boy.

“His eyes were cloudy… there was no movement at all,” Price said.

Price performed CPR and chest compressions, but the boy remained unresponsive.

“I thought he was going to die. We weren’t sure what was going to happen,” Harvey said. “I told Katelyn to go get the back board and I told the other lifeguard to call 911.”

Harvey described the situation as intense and traumatic – she had tried CPR several more times until finally, the boy showed signs of life.

“He began coughing up what was obstructing his airway,” Harvey said.

The child was transported to a local hospital, where he is recovering with his mother by his side.
