Tax Breaks for Va. Companies that Telework

Virginia is offering tax credits for businesses that allow employees to work remotely.

Legislation adopted this year provides up to $1,200 in tax credits per employee or up to $50,000 per company, for eligible telework expenses incurred during 2012 and 2013. To be eligible, employers must apply with the Virginia Department of Taxation by Oct. 31.

One of the bill's sponsors, State Sen. Mark Herring, a Leesburg Democrat, tells the Daily Press that working remotely reduces traffic, improves productivity and allows workers to spend more time with families and less time on the road.

State Department of Rail and Public Transportation spokeswoman Courtney Moyer says the trial program will last two years and the tax breaks are capped at $1 million dollars.
