Swimmer Pulled From Water Dies Following Bay Swim

A swimmer who was pulled from the water during the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim has died.

The man was pulled from the water Sunday about 11:15 a.m. near the Bay Bridge, The Capital reported. He was one of more than 600 swimmers attempting to complete a 4.4-mile swim across the bay.

The swimmer was identified through his race number as 58-year-old Robert Matysek of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Rescuers say he was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water. Anne Arundel County fire department spokesman Lt. Cliff Kooser says rescuers performed CPR and rushed him to a hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said Matysek died Sunday afternoon.

Numerous swimmers were pulled from the water during the event by volunteers on boats.
