A suspicious package -- with a firearm and a suspected explosive device in it -- led Alexandria Police to the discovery of a suicide in the 400 block of Hanson Lane Monday night.
Arlington County Fire and Police Department were called to a backyard on Hanson Lane at about 6:15 p.m. They found a bag containing a firearm and something they suspected was an explosive.
Several nearby houses were evacuated before police bomb squads blew up the device in a controlled explosion.
During the response, police in a helicopter spotted a body in a nearby wooded area. Police say that person apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
They also believe he was the owner of the suspicious package. He was identified as James Froman, 50, of Alexandria.
