Suspect in 2 Maryland Rapes Also Person of Interest in 2 Other Cases

The suspect arrested in a Maryland rape is also a suspect in another rape and a person of interest in two other cases, Prince George's County Police said.

James William Diggs, 48, was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with first-degree rape.

Around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, he grabbed a woman from behind as she walked in the 3800 block of 38th Avenue in Cottage City, police said. He put a knife to the victim's throat and attacked her in a secluded area off the street, according to police.

The victim identified Diggs from a six-person photo lineup, News4's Shomari Stone reported. Diggs replied affirmatively when asked if he is innocent.

Diggs, of Bladensburg, was arrested Friday afternoon. Police announced the arrest less than an hour after they said they'd obtained an arrest warrant for him.

Charge are pending against Diggs for a Feb. 25 sexual assault of a woman in the 4100 block of 54th Street in Bladensburg, police said.

Diggs is also a person of interest in two other rape cases:

  • Sept. 8, 2014 at 6:45 p.m. in the 5100 block of Quincy Street in Bladensburg
  • Oct. 20, 2014 at 8:45 p.m. in the 5800 block of Annapolis Road in Cheverly

After the February assault, police said they believed the same person was responsible for all three of those attacks.
