Busy Summer for Road Projects

Drivers, get ready to hit the breaks. Summer brings the busiest construction season of the year, and this summer will be especially busy.

“It’s one of the busiest construction seasons we’ve had in a long time,” said Joan Morris, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation .

Crews will finish the Intercounty Connector interchanges over the heavily traveled Route 29 and Briggs Chaney Road in Montgomery County.

Construction on the Capital Beltway around Tysons Corner will continue. Beginning this month, workers will start shifting high-occupancy toll lanes from the median to the outer lanes and rebuilding more than 50 bridges and overpasses.

There will be Capital Beltway lane changes this week in Silver Spring, Md., for construction on the bridge between New Hampshire Avenue and University Boulevard over the Northwest Branch. Lanes will be narrowed and there will be a work-zone speed limit.

Meanwhile, in the District, the 14th Street Bridge rehabilitation project continues, along with other construction.
