Sullivan Supporters Rally At UVA

Final vote on ousted President's status comes Tuesday

Hundreds of supporters of ousted University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan gathered on the Charlottesville campus Sunday to demand her return to the school.

The "Rally for Honor'' came two days before UVA's Board of Visitors meets Tuesday to consider reinstating Sullivan.

Students, faculty, university deans and alumni have rallied in support of Sullivan and have criticized the board's executive committee for a lack of transparency in reaching a decision that shocked the campus.

On Friday Gov. Bob McDonnell threatened to replace the entire board if it fails to resolve the furor.

"The university community needs closure now to move forward," McDonnell's letter read, in part. "Tuesday must be your final decision ... If you fail to [decide], I will ask for the resignation of the entire Board on Wednesday."

Hours before McDonnell's letter was sent, Carl Ziethaml, the university dean appointed as Sullivan's interim replacement, said he won't do anything related to the job until after the board meeting.
