Heavy Rains Flood Some Md. Roads

Two Maryland roads were closed Friday morning due to flooding.

In Gaithersburg, MD-124 between Brink Road and Watkins Road was closed due to heavy rain from  Thursday night. As of 6 a.m. Friday, Riffle Ford Road at Darnestown Road in Germantown was closed; and in Clarksburg, Newcut Road was closed at N. Frederick Road.

Doppler radar estimated 3-4 inches of rain fell over parts of the warned area between Damascus and Cooksville by about 8:40 p.m.

Around 8 p.m., a swift water rescue team responded to a report of a car stuck in high water at McEndree and Rover Mill in West Friendship, according to Howard County Fire & EMS.

Most flash flood deaths occur in automobiles. Motorists are reminded never to drive where water covers the road, as floodwater usually is deeper than it appears and just a foot of flowing water can sweep vehicles off the road.

Some storms produced damaging winds, lightning and hail.

A tornado warning for Frederick and Clarke counties expired at 5:30 p.m. Doppler radar indicated a tornado, but there is no confirmation on the ground Storm Team 4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer said.
