Storms from last week caused untreated sewer waste to overflow a manhole near the C&O Canal.
DC Water said the overflow went into the C&O Canal.
The National Park Service said the Capital Crescent Trail remains closed and are recommending any park visitor who used the canal before Lock 6 should sanitize any equipment that came in contact with the water.
They are also telling everyone to refrain from fishing or recreating in the C&O Canal below Lock 6 through midday Sunday.
