McAuliffe Names New Superintendent for Va. Schools

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has picked Steve Staples to be the next state superintendent of public instruction.

McAuliffe announced Monday he's appointing Staples to replace Patricia Wright, who announced her retirement earlier this month.

Staples recently served as the executive director of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents.

He had previously served on the faculty at the School of Education at The College of William & Mary and as school superintendent in York County.

Staples was named the Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 1997.
