State Workers Could Be Owed Money Due to Payroll Glitch

Maryland officials say thousands of state employees' extra pay for overtime and night shifts may have been miscalculated.

The mistake was discovered when the state installed a new payroll and timekeeping system this year.

Budget and Management Secretary David R. Brinkley says the mistakes could affect up to 13,000 current employees and an unknown number of former workers. Each of those people could be owed from $2 to $30 a pay period.

Officials say extra pay for those affected by the mistake, including police, hospital employees and corrections workers, was miscalculated by payroll workers at agencies across the government.

The state notified public-employee unions on Friday about the issue and say they plan to work with the unions on a plan to resolve the problem.
