Spruce Up Your Green Space for Almost Nothing

April 22 is Earth Day, the perfect time to think about sprucing up your green space.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance shared with us inexpensive ways to get trees, mulch, seeds and gardening advice.

First, ask about free mulch from your local government. We checked Prince George's, Montgomery, and Charles counties in Maryland, as well as Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia and D.C. All offer free mulch or compost while supplies last. It's made from recycled leaves, wood trimmings and tree removals.

Looking to plant a tree? You can join the Arbor Day Foundation for $10. It gives you a 33 percent discount on trees when you buy online from the foundation.

Need seeds to plant? The National Gardening Association has a free seed swap that allows people to find seeds they want or share extra seeds with others.

Need gardening tools? Kiplinger says you can get free tools at Freecycle.org. It's a nonprofit network of people offering items, like gardening tools, they no longer want -- for free.
