Something Stinks In Virginia

City leaders scratching heads and covering noses over mystery smell

There’s a run on nose plugs in Suffolk, Va. Residents have been complaining about a mysterious odor for months. Now city leaders are trying to pick up the scent and figure out where it’s coming from.

The city is inviting the public to share thoughts Thursday in an effort to get to the bottom of the stinky mystery.  City spokeswoman Debbie George said representatives from various companies and facilities will be at the meeting.

The stench is in the area of U.S. 58 near the Suffolk city limits.

Eric Nielsen, director of public works, told Hampton Roads TV station WAVY it is unclear where the smell is coming from.

"There are combinations including swamp land. There are also large areas of deforested land that was cleared a few years ago. We have also had the fourth largest landfall on record. These could be adding to the problem," Nielsen said.

The station report that Suffolk is bringing in reinforcements. They are going to hire an environmental company that has “odor control” experience.
