Nightmare Commute on Rock Creek Parkway

Rock Creek Parkway is back open after a nightmare morning commute caused by two separate issues.

The first started with reports of smoke around the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge in Georgetown. It turned out the cable that runs under the bridge was smoking, said D.C. Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer.

In an unrelated issue, an injured man was found underneath the M Street Bridge. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. No word on how that person died.

Rock Creek Parkway was shut down at Calvert Street, and the closure extended past the Kennedy Center. Things opened up around 9:30 a.m., but it was too late to prevent major traffic tie-ups in the area.
