The Gallery Place Metro station is back open after a train malfunctioned and filled a platform with smoke, Metro says.

A "mechanical malfunction" happened on the Red Line train about 3:15 p.m., Metro said. The train was evacuated. It's not clear how many passengers were on it at the time.

Fire department activity was reported at the station around 3:45 p.m.

Red Line service was suspended between Farragut North & NoMa Gallaudet for more than an hour. A spokesperson for Metro said the Gallery Place station was back open, with Red Line trains single-tracking through the station. Riders should expect delays in both directions. Normal service has resumed on the Green and Yellow lines.

A "mechanical malfunction" caused the smoke, WMATA said. No further information on the malfunction was provided.

No injuries were reported, Metro said.
