Smelly D.C. Trees Getting Sprayed

DDOT crews try to freshen the spring air

The sun is shining, the trees are blooming and the smell of spring is in the air -- and District officials don’t want some stinky trees to ruin that.

The District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration is now going around the city spraying female ginkgo fruit trees.  The fruit on the trees can carry a very unpleasant smell.

The spraying started in Wards 1, 2 and 6 during the overnight hours Tuesday.  That’s where female ginkgo trees are most prevalent.  The crews will continue to spray in Wards 4, 3, 7, 8 and 5 the rest of the week.

DDOT Trees is using the same spray that has been used the past several years. There will be no need for residents to move vehicles parked on the streets.  For additional information, residents can contact DDOT Trees at 202-671-5133.
