One Dead in Small Plane Crash in Montgomery County

Second person suffered life-threatening injuries

Officials are identifying the pilot of the downed small plane as Frank Schmidt, a flight instructor and fixture at the nearby Davis Airport in Montgomery County, Md.

The plane crashed Monday evening, killing Schmidt and injuring another.

Witnesses said the plane rolled over and went down just after going up, News4's Shomari Stone reported.

FAA officials are headed to the scene in the 23600 block of Pocahontas Drive in Laytonsville to assist Montgomery County fire and police with the investigation.

The pilot, who also had years of aviation experience, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
